This month we had the topic of animals as our theme for the month. We had lots of fun learning about the Farm and the Vets. We also explored An telifis in Irish and celebrated St Patricks Day.
Aistear
For the first half of the month we explored the vets in Aistear and then the farm. We had our roleplay area, sand, art, construction, investigation and small world areas.
Role-play
The students got to explore and use the language associated with the vets, the students had a waiting area set up with a receptionist desk where they were to check-in with their animals and wait to be called by the vet. They were then taken into the vets office where they were checked over and given their diagnosis. Then the role play area changed into a farmers market, where the students were selling the produce that they had harvested from the farm.
Construction
In the construction area we were building our own vets using lego bricks and animals provided. Our investigation area changed to a construction area if we got our planting done also and students were using the straws to construct their own flowers.
Small world
At the small world area students were using mini version of the animals to create their own vets and farms. This encouraged use of the vocabulary and language and getting into character during play. During the farm theme we had a large farm mat with lots of farm animals and tractors that the students could use to create their own farm.
Sand
The sand was available during the farm Aistear, here students were planting and harvesting vegetables for the farmers market stall.
Art | Investigation |
At the art area we were making our own farm animals using paint and paper plates. | In this area students were exploring the lifecycle of a sunflower with cutting and sticking and then planting their own sun flower seeds. Students discussed and followed the necessary steps to plant and help a flower grow. |
St Patricks Day
We also had a week of St Patricks Day Aistear which involved sand, art, construction and small world. We had read the story ' How to catch a leprechaun' and so in our construction area we were building and creating different traps that might work to catch a leprechaun. In sand we were find the hidden gold to fill up the leprechauns treasure pot. In art we were making rainbow art with cotton buds and in small world we were making our own St Patricks Day parade.
