As a primary school teacher a very important part of my job is to encourage the children to discover their talents and what makes them special. The Yellow Flag encourages children to be proud of who and what they are. It makes them realise that the things that make them different make them special. All children had a chance to use all their unique talents to contribute to our intercultural day, including colouring, art projects, building of 3D models, and writing of projects.
There has been a Whole School Approach to the Yellow Flag Project. As part of this journey, teachers in our school have seen a huge change in our children. Children are now speaking about where they come from and take great pride in sharing this information with others. From Junior Infants to 6th class, children took part both in their own classes and also linking in with pupils from other classes.
Our Diversity Code – Accept Include Respect has had a hugely positive effect in how our children treat each other. The conversations in classes about the Code were age appropriate and mindful of children’s ability. Students take an interest in each other’s cultures and respect them for their differences.
The children of Newtownmountkennedy realise that although we are all different we all deserve to be treated the same - regardless of skin colour, culture, religion, ability, likes and dislikes.
Also teachers were mindful of linking Yellow Flag with other areas of the curriculum e.g. Green Schools, Music, Art, History,, Religion, Literacy, Drama.
Culture Day was a wonderful success & brought an air of excitement and enthuasism to the school. Parents, Staff, pupils and community came together to celebrate the wonderful colourful place that Newtownmountkennedy Primary School is.
