Dear Parents,
I hope you are well during these difficult and unprecedented times. Below are some notes outlining how you and your child can communicate with me over the coming weeks as well as how to access work suggestions.
As many of you are aware we will be using the school website and Aladdin to relay messages, suggestions, etc going forward. Suggested work will be uploaded to Aladdin and can be accessed under the ‘Homework’ tab. If you are having difficulty accessing the site please contact the school. (c19parentsupport@newtownprimary.ie) Remember, this is only suggested work, so do not feel under pressure to complete and do what works best for your family and child. Please remind your child not to worry if they do not complete all or any of the work set for a given day. It might be helpful to set a short timer for your child to complete some work within.
I can be contacted at denright@newtownprimary.ie. Please feel free to share your child’s work with me so I can correct and offer feedback and don’t forget to send work to c19parentsupport@newtownprimary.ie so it can be shared on the school website.
Reading/Oral Language:
Encourage your child to read for 15-20 minutes per day and to use a dictionary/Google to find the meaning of unknown words. These new words could then be put into a written sentence. Ask them questions about what they have read – character/plot descriptions, predictions etc.
Maths:
The maths for the coming week is all revision based. Remind them to check the sign carefully before proceeding with addition/subtraction.
Addition – Remind them to ‘rename’ (carry) the 1 if the value is greater than 9 and don’t forget to add it to the next number.
Subtraction – Many of the children are familiar with the phrase “more on top, don’t top. More on the floor go next door”
Writing:
Remind your child to self-assess their own work, checking for correct punctuation and capital letters after each sentence. Encourage them to be as descriptive as possible in their writing, aiming to include as many adjectives and WOW words as possible.
Useful Websites:
The ‘Help my Kid Learn’ page on the school website has numerous supportive links that covers all curricular areas. Children should be encouraged to access these for a more interactive approach to their learning.
If there is anything I can do to help please do not hesitate to contact me. Please give a big hello from me to your children and tell them I hope to see them soon!
Take care,
David Enright,
