Congratulations to Yasmin Phibbs O'Connor from 6th Class who was presented today with her award as Wicklow County Finalist in the Someone Like Me Essay competition which encourages students to promote positive attitudes among people with different abilities. The Awards Ceremony took place in Farmleigh House in Phoenix Park. Farmleigh House is the official Irish Government guest house and was host to Queen Elizabeth II and Barack Obama in recent years, so Yasmin was following in some very famous footsteps. Yasmin was accompanied to the ceremony by her mum, her teacher and Tadhg - her classmate and inspiration for the essay. The ceremony was a lovely occasion during which many inspirational young people received their awards as county finalists. The awards were hosted by rugby analyst Brent Pope, did you know he has also written some children's books? As Brent Pope introduced each winner and spoke about their inspirational essays, Minister of State Aodhán Ó Ríordáin presented each finalist with their award - a €200 IT voucher for themselves and a €2000 IT voucher for their school. During the ceremony Yasmin was interviewed by Gill Stedman, presenter for RTE News2Day who asked her about her thoughts on the essay competition. Yasmin and Tadhg got to meet and have photographs taken with all three of the presenters afterwards and then enjoyed a lovely lunch in the fabulous conservatory. All in all it was a lovely day in a beautiful historical setting with some very inspirational young people. Well done to Yasmin - her class, her teacher and the whole school are very proud of her.
