Athbhliain faoi mhaise daoibh go léir Rang a 6!
Happy New Year to you all 6th class!
So we have kickstarted into online learning since our return on Monday, and naturally enough we've had a few hurdles to get over but am glad to see everyone getting settled in now. Although this unexpected school closure is a challenge for many of us, and there is lots of adapting to be done as we work and learn from home while also being restricted in where we go and who we see, we can also see it as a great time of opportunity. We all learn in different ways and sometimes in class we don't always get a chance to explore learning in a way that suits each child, so this is a great time to look at all the other ways we can learn in the world around us.

Although this unexpected school closure is a challenge for many of us, and there is lots of adapting to be done as we work and learn from home while also being restricted in where we go and who we see, we can also see it as a great time of opportunity. Being at home with our families, also provides great interpersonal learning opportunities around co-operation, conflict resolution, relationship building, tolerance , understanding, as well as lots of practical learning around meal preparation, baking, chores, maintenance, diy etc. We also get to see the importance of family, to bond with parents and siblings and to express our gratitude and appreciation of how families work. I would love to see 6th class children take responsibility some evening to prepare a meal for your family. Good opportunity to plan, budget for , (safely)shop for ingredients and wow your families!! You could also link it to geography , select a country and have a themed menu! Mexican enchiladas & guacamole anyone???!! |

Sometimes we view play as a break from learning. But in fact play is a serious way of learning and shouldn't be underestimated! It is also a great way to make sense of the world around us, to work things out and learn about ourselves. Its a great way to process emotions and feelings. It also involves problem solving, risk taking, cooperation, patience and helps to generate ideas and boost creativity.
So take this opportunity to explore play that you might not always get in school. I know you are away from friends, but that doesn't need to be a limiting factor, just another thing to adapt around.

You will also have an opportunity to explore your surroundings: what seasonal changes are occurring as the days get longer. We are coming out of the darkness of Winter and there are little signs of Spring emerging by the day. Getting out in nature teaches us lots, helps to develop our senses and links with creativity and learning. Think of all the times you have spent in the woods on our walks and how enjoyable they were. Really, there is learning everywhere. We will be setting work on a daily basis and we encourage you to engage in this important learning as much as is possible in your present circumstances and stay connected with your class, but we also encourage you to use this time well, use it as a time to explore learning, tune into your interests and passions, and learn new skills.....all of which is valuable learning. Keep your bodies healthy by feeding it healthy, nutritious food, as well as a treat from time to time! Move daily and monitor your screen time! And remember chose love and kindness in everything you do! |
As always, we would love to see pictures of whatever learning you chose to engage in, so feel free to send photos via email agillick@newtownprimary.ie or tobrien@newtownprimary.ie and we can upload to the blog to share your experiences!
