Diversity is one of the most important things in our school; our Code is A.I.R. (Accept, Include, Respect). These are important values and we try to practise them every day in our lives.
Accept;
We accept all religions in our school. We also accept different cultures and people who speak different languages, eat different foods and celebrate different festivals.
Include;
We try to include people in our work, games, and activities even if they speak different languages and have difficulty communicating with others. We try to teach and learn as much as we can by having fun and learning about different countries and cultures.
Respect;
We respect all people, regardless of the colour of their skin, or the religions they practice it’s what’s on the inside the person that really matters. We respect all; male, female, young, old, black or white it does not matter.
Our school encourages diversity, welcomes everyone and does not tolerate bullying, racism or discrimination of any kind.
Racism.
Harriet Tubman. I remember reading a story in class about a young girl called Harriert Tubman. Her family were all slaves. She was separated from her family and had been sold off to work for rich families in America. Harriet was black and the rich family was white. Harriet was whipped and smacked every day, a few years later she escaped and became an example for people who were treated badly because they were different and for people who were bullied by others.
We could all learn a lot from the story of Harriet and how she showed courage and strength and was someone people admired.
Diversity Committee.
I am on the Diversity Committee in school. We have a meeting every month and talk about different topics. Sometimes we go around to the classes and talk to them. We received our first Yellow Flag last year. Accepting Diversity is an important thing to do in life, so try to do it every day.
