Welcome Back!
Happy New year and welcome to 2022!! I hope you all had a lovely break and Christmas, it was lovely to come back to all the boys and girls in January ready to start Term 2! This month we got straight back to work with the topics of shopping and clothes. We explored the Supermarket and the clothes shop in Aistear, as well as Eadai in Gaeilge, weight in maths and continuing on with our sounds and letters in English. |
Morning Activities
We have started to progress on our daily morning activities also, we are now practicing our phonics and math skills as well as our fine motor skills with the help of various games and activities. Some of these include picture matching, number games, card games, lace threading, peg boards etc.
Aistear
Supermarket
For the first two weeks back we had the Supermarket set up in our role play area where the students could take on the role of a cashier, shop manager, sales assistant and customers. Exploring the language and roles of purchasing food with money and the process involved of writing a list before you go, finding the items, paying for them and then receiving a receipt. There was also a construction area where they made shops out of lego, small world where they had a toy version of Aldi to incorporate with their mini figures and sand play.
Clothes Shop
We then had the clothes shop set up in the role play area - our very own version of Penneys in Newtownmountkennedy!
The students loved this topic as it allowed them to explore the props of clothes and accessories, trying the clothes on and purchasing the ones they liked best. We also had a construction area to make our own shops, an SESE investigation area where we looked at and sorted the clothes we might wear in different types of weather, a water play area where we could wash clothes, and a small world area.

Puzzle Fridays!
On Fridays we usually have play-dough Aistear where the students can explore our topics through the use of play-dough, crafting and moulding out the foods/animals/ objects linked to it. It is also great for their fine motor skills. This month we took a break from this and the students have been enjoying playing with and solving puzzles together!
Art
Each month in school we have an artist of the month and we always try to include some art activities inspired by this artist. This month our artist was Banksy, the anonymous street artist. The students used diluted paint and droppers to add colour to one of Banksy's famous pieces 'Nola - Girl with umbrella'. The students really enjoyed this activity as it was so different to any other art process we had explored this year.
Handwriting
This term we are starting to make great progress with our cursive handwriting and have started learning how to form some letters. Each week we have been learning a new letter!
Class reward
At the end of each month we get to have a class reward for good behaviour! This month we got to visit the playground and enjoy some small treats while we watched a movie.
