On June 24th, all the pupils of Newtownmountkennedy School cycled, scooted or walked to school as part of Bike Week 2019. Cyclists travelled from Kiladreenan, Garden Village and from Dunnes, making their way through the village, along by Wicklow Hills or Rossmore and into school. They were joined by walkers and scooters along the route. Many thanks to the Garda, volunteer parents and staff members for marshalling the route and supporting the cyclists to arrive in school safely. They created quite the spectacle with such numbers and great effort was made to get up the hills! On arrival at school, each class parked their bikes and helmets carefully and safely and a day of bike related activities ensued. Classes had previously prepared for the day by doing cycle safety lessons. All classes from junior to 6th including our 3 classes for children with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder moved throughout many stations which covered a variety of learning opportunities across many curricular areas. These included a bike obstacle course, a slow bike race, writing tasks, word searches, hidden pictures, label bike parts, spelling and picture match relays, STEM task to create a bike that could stand alone, art task to design a bike that would stand out, shape match task for younger classes, bike safety song/videos, design/decorate a helmet art activity and map your route taken to school. Children who didn’t have bikes had the opportunity to engage in the obstacle course and slow bike race using borrowed bikes and great kindness and cooperation was shown. Some children reported feeling better about riding a bike and everyone had the opportunity to get involved. Tasks were differentiated according to class level and abilities. Costs incurred on the day included craft and building supplies for 360 children as well as prizes of locks, lights, water bottles, bike gloves, pencil cases which were distributed per class as raffle prizes etc. Many thanks to Wicklow Co. Co for funding these costs . A great day was had by all. Huge success thanks to parent and staff support and of course the enthusiasm and energy of the children. We look forward to seeing our numbers of cyclists increase as local infrastructure changes to support them. Congratulations to all pupils, staff and parents on a wonderful school year. Ms. Lennon's end of school year Summer Newsletter from the Principal can be viewed HERE. Click HERE to view the latest Board of Management report (20th June). Last Friday we had prize giving. Well done to each and every child for all their individual successes this year.
Wishing you all a happy, relaxing, fun and sunshine filled ( hopefully! ) summer holidays and we look forward to seeing you all, especially our new Junior Infants, for the new school year ( 2019-2020) on Thursday the 29th August. The Wicklow Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Sports day took place a week later than expected on the 19th June and thankfully a sunny day made for a great display of fun and sportsmanship. Congratulations to all children who competed and represented our school on the day. You did us proud. Well done! Click HERE to view more photos of the day in our school gallery.
The Student Council entered a competition with the I.N.T.O (Primary Teachers Union) celebrating being 150 years working for teachers. The Student Council had to write a 150 word letter saying how they would spend €150 on something for the whole school. We wanted to come up with ideas that would be good for children’s mental health. Some of the ideas were dancing, yoga and meditation for the whole school. The Student Council wrote the letter. Three weeks later we found out we won. Only 4 other schools in Wicklow won the €150. We were all delighted. We won a €150 Dundrum voucher. We all decided to buy lego for the whole school. So Ms.Hurley went into Dundrum and bought lego. Then we decided to make a lego club out of it. First of all we wrote a note to each teacher in the school to see if they wanted to take part in the lego club. Then we made a timetable where all the fourteen Student Council members each had at least five classes. Fifteen teachers took part in the lego club for the month of June. Each class that took part had their own day and time for the month of June. We divided the lego into plastic bags so each child has their own bag of lego. We had boxes of lego as well just in case. The student Council members jobs were to communicate and give out the bags of lego to each child and make sure they are happy. This is our third week of doing the lego club. Its an honour being on the Student Council and doing the lego club.
Thank you to the parents committee for organising the school fundraiser Hell and Back which took place last Sunday, the 16th June. Huge congratulations to all children, parents and staff who participated on the day.
