Hello Senior Infants,
We hope that you had a great week and got to spend time outside when the weather was nice. Did you enjoy learning about money? We are sure that you had fun making coin rubbings! We hope you liked the story of Chicken Licken, what an adventurous journey they had!

We would like to wish Emma a very happy birthday. We would also like to send Sophie K a big birthday wish for yesterday. We hope you both had a great day!

This week’s theme is space. Not only will you be finding out lots of information about the planets, but you will also be building rockets! You will be learning about 3D shapes in Maths too. Ms Darcy loves singing so she recorded the song Twinkle twinkle in Irish for you to sing along with and make up your own actions to it.

Yesterday, Ms Keddy took part in a 24 hour run for charity with her Newtown GAA football team. Do you know how long 24hours is? It is a full day! Don’t worry I wasn’t running for 24hours as there were lots of people running. Maybe you know or saw some people running around where you live?

The sounds you will be learning this week are:
Oi: Oink, coin, soil, point, foil, join, toilets, spoil, moist, joint
Ue: Barbecue, queue, statue, fuel, cue, fuel, argue, rescue, value

We have uploaded the home learning activities on Aladdin. Remember to only do what you can and what suits you and your family.

Tricky Words!

Tricky words are words which can be difficult to 'sound out' easily. These words usually come up in their readers. That is why it is important that we learn these tricky words.

Choose five new words from the list below each week for your child. Write them out or print them and let the games begin!

Where’s the word? – Take all words out of envelope and place them facing up. Ask your child to find a word (e.g. One) as fast as they can. Give clues as necessary (This word has 3 letters etc.,).
What’s the Word? – Same as previous game except you change roles. Ask the child to pick a word from the envelope. They then have to describe it to you (eg. This word begins with an M, and ends in a y and has 5 letters “etc. Mammy.
Kim’s Game – Present 3 words (or more/ less depending on your child’s confidece with their words) to your child. Ask the children to close their eyes, and then take one of the words away. Ask your child to open their eyes and see if they can remember the word you took way.
Make my sentence! – All cards facing up. Make up a sentence (e.g. I am a shoe, but the sillier the better!) and ask the children to find the words, from their word envelopes, and put them in order, to make your sentence.
Go Fish! – All cards facing down. Child and adult take turns and “fish” for a word. When a word is picked up, turn it over and see if you can read the word. If you can, you can keep the word. If you cannot, you must give the word to the other player. The person with the most “fish” (words) at the end of the game wins.

Hello Senior Infants.
We hope you enjoyed learning about zoo animals and money in Maths. It was lovely to see the great work you have been doing again this week. If you would like to post your work on the school’s website, email it to c19@parentsupport.ie.

May is the month of Mary. Look at this May altar which Ms Darcy’s mother has in her house. Since we have two more weeks left in May why don’t you make one too and say one hail Mary everyday?

Today is Dominika’s birthday, we hope that you have a lovely day Dominika. We also wish Jamie a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY for Wednesday!

We are glad to hear that you have been reading lots and we are sure that you have come across new words while reading. In school you had been learning tricky/ sight words which help you with your reading so we have decided to do another blog post on how to practise your tricky words. Also, the daily challenges and exercises are now under 'COVID-19 - Extra Activities' on the school website.

Irish Tips

The children in Senior Infants enjoy learning Irish and it is important that they keep practising Irish. We were delighted to hear that some parents have decided that they would like to learn Irish too.

Here are some tips to help both children and parents practise their Irish:

Watch the Irish videos we send every day on Aladdin. They are on the YouTube channel Gaeilge2020.
Repeat what has been said on the videos.
Draw pictures of new words.
Use the pictures to play games e.g. Cad a tharraing tú? Tharraing mé leon.
Watch cartoons on TG4.

Dia Dhaoibh (Hello) Senior Infants!

Conas atá sibh? (How are you?) Tá súil againn go bhfuil sibh go maith (We hope that you are well). We have made a list of all the Irish words which you have been learning as we have heard that some parents have set themselves a challenge to learn Irish as well. Maith Thú! (Well done!) The list is attached in the next post and will be updated every week.
We hope you all had an enjoyable weekend and had some fun in the sun. Did you like learning all about the Farm last week? Ms Darcy’s father was so delighted to welcome two baby lambs to his farm last month.

This week the topic is zoo animals. You will listen to the story of Elmer the Patchwork Elephant.
You will learn some words that have ‘ash’ and ‘ump’ in them.
Ash: cash, mash, rash, bash, dash, trash, smash, crash, flash, lash.
Ump: hump, jump, lump, bump, dump, lump, thump
In Maths you will be learning all about money, you can play shop to practise this.

Here are the tasks for the week ahead...

Alphabet Exercises!
A = 10 right leg lunges
B = 15 high knees
C = 15 bum kicks
D = 10 squats
E = 10 left leg lunges
F = 10 Sumo squats (wide legs, feet point out)
G = 10 burpees
H = 20 hops on left foot
I = 20 hops on right foot
J = 20 seconds plank
K = 5 squat jumps (as low as you can squat to as high as you can jump!)
L = 10 narrow squats (feet together)
M = 10 mountain climbers
N = 20 seconds wall sit (sit against a wall, your thighs should be parallel to the ground)
O = 20 seconds speed jog on the spot
P = Scissors jumps (lunge jumps)
Q = 10 wide squats to narrow squat jumps (like jumping jacks but go lower and no arms)
R = 20 seconds hop-scotch – swap legs after 10 seconds
S = hold tree pose for 20 seconds (standing on one foot, other foot bends and rests above/below knee
T = 20 seconds bicycle legs (lie on back, feet in air)
U = 20 seconds arm circles forward (arms straight out in T shape – make very small circles with arms)
V = 20 seconds arm circles backwards (arms straight out in T shape – make very small circles with arms)
W = 20 Russian twists (sit on floor, legs bent, feet together reach to left touch ground reach to right touch ground)
X = 5 push
ups (knees on ground, back straight)
Z = 10 leg kick backs (on all fours, lift one leg, keeping leg bent, kick leg back towards the roof, swap legs)

We hope the detective work is going well for you! It is great to see you all working extremely hard, keep up the super work! Keep an eye on the 'Outdoor activities' section of the school website under the 'Covid 19' tab for some easy things to do while you are out and about. Biodiversity Detectives!

The focus for the month of May is on Biodiversity. This means that we will be looking at the variety of plants, animals, and trees around us.

We have attached some activities below, that you can do in your own environment.
Remember to use some of your senses (sight, smell, touch, hearing) when you take part in the activities.
These questions might help you for your detective work.
What can I see? What can I smell? What can I feel? What can I hear?

Good Morning Senior Infants!
We hope you are all keeping safe and well during this time. We hope you enjoyed Active Home Week last week and did lots of fun exercises. We are sure you are missing Jackie’s GAA lessons!

This week the topic is Farming so you will be learning all about farm animals and listening to the story of the Ugly Duckling in both Irish and English.

You will be revising the sh, ch, th and wh words this week.
Sh - shell, shirt, ship, shark, sheep, shape, shop, bush, shed, dish, wish, fish
Ch - chips, chick, children, chess, chocolate, chain, chop, chill, chin, chair, chat, church, lunchbox, pinch, rich, bench, branch
Th - thumb, thimble, thorn, third, thursday, thin, with, moth, bath, path
Wh - whip, wheel, whiskers, whistle, whale, when
